School Room- The Ugly Truth!

Ok... so this blog is named The Mess Exposed, as a reminder to be truthful about the struggles and imperfections of homeschooling and not present a perfect front others can't live up to... and right now, I'm soooo wishing it weren't. I committed myself to participating in the iHomeschool network blog hop that is hopping weekly around different topics. Unfortunately, this week's topic is your school room. So, with red cheeks, I present to you the pictures of my school room...

UGH! It has so much potential, but it seems to look like this more often than not! My daughter's gymnastic mat somehow gets stored in here, the desk has become the "catch all," the kids apparently don't know how to put books away, or won't. Even though there are 2 garbage cans in here, there is garbage all over the floor! SO, most of the time I keep the door closed, and make the kids come back here for stuff, because I get sooo frustrated. There are 3 of them and 1 of me... A couple of years ago, we all drove to IKEA and got this great bookshelf. I came up with a great way to help my most unorganized child stay organized. I had a ton of letter trays, and fit them into the squares of the shelves. Each tray is to hold its own subject, and you don't even have to use the same tray each time. Just put it back into a clean, empty slot.  Somehow, even that is too much for him.  I tell him to put his school books away and come back here to find them on the floor, desk, or shoved in square of the shelf that doesn't have the letter trays... sigh...

About 5-6 times a year, I really clean it out and we use it and keep it clean for a couple of weeks...then someone comes over and everyone puts stuff in...you know, the stuff you're not sure where it should go. Then it starts getting to the point where I don't have enough time to get it, and the cycle starts over.  It takes me an entire day to get it clean, and if you've been following my blog at all, you know I don't have many of those.  But, now, I will try to work on it this week, so I can post a picture of it all clean!  When it is clean, I love it, and I love doing some of our school in there. I've got a corner desk outside of the corner, that way the kids and I can sit across from each other, all my supplies are right there and we don't have to wait or run all over to look at them, and I'm one of those nerdy people who love school supplies, school rooms, and school (elementary) all together....

If I'm able to get it back in shape, I'll post pictures of how it is supposed to look!  Hopefully you guys are having better luck with your school rooms!

Not Back to School Blog Hop This was so popular at ihomeschoolnetwork, that I thought I'd share here too...

    1. I looked for yours, but couldn't find them...of course I'm coming off of 3 in a row night shifts, so that MIGHT have something to do with it! LOL!!!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Good job keeping it real! The only reason my school room is so "neat" is because it is the front room of our home.

    1. Thanks Dawn! It is really embarrassing to share that, but I set out to tell the truth...sometimes the truth is exactly what we want to hide because it's so embarrassing!

      Have a great day!

  3. Working at home AND homeschooling doesn't leave much time for anything else. (I do daycare from my home, which brings its own unique mess :P) My desk is usually piled high with stuff that needs to be filed and put away. Our dining room table ALWAYS has to be cleared off before we can eat dinner. (And truth be told we usually eat lunch on the couches...haha!) Nothing ever stays clean or organized at my house, so I am very impressed with your bookshelves! They look great. :)

Oh and Dawn, I agree with you. My school room is our living room and therefore must be neat and tidy (which it rarely is) because the daycare parents (and my husband) come through there! ;)

    1. Jennifer...the only reason the bookshelves look so good is because no one uses the white ones any more, I recently cleaned in there, and the girls don't read yet! LOL! You can see in one of the pictures where my son has set up a secret reading area and even left his book open! What a nut!

If you figure out how to keep it all straight, please let me know! ;)

  4. I love your transparency! Our room is always messy by Friday. It takes me (and the kids while I bark orders at them) a good hour or so to clean it up. Maybe one day I'll get to be as brave as you, and I'll post a Friday picture. Thanks for sharing! Know that you're not alone! I'll be thinking of and praying for you as you contemplate cleaning up your room this week.

  5. I love it! I giggled when I saw the bookshelves. That reminded me of my days when I use to homeschool my daughter and her cousin we had a schoolroom. My spouse was asking for bookshelves for months, and one day it dawned on me that their stuff was just all over the floor. So I gave the bookcases to my spouse and got a console for them to each have a drawer to dump their stuff into. From that day on it was neater. Of course there was only two of them and they were dumpers. They never did catch on to the idea of a trash can though. They must be very creative, active children.

    1. Thanks! They are very creative, wild...um I mean active children! Such a joy that, unless I'm showing pictures on my blog, I'm able to block out the thoughts of the school room!

  6. It is a relief to see that I am not the only one! I had big dreams of a beautiful room of books, and neatly organized useful things, and color indexed this and thats, yup... not so much! But we do have fun!! Thanks for sharing, it was a nice pick-me-up, oddly enough!

  7. I love the honesty. If we schooled anywhere but our kitchen I'm sure ours would be much messier.

  8. Ahhh.... thanks for sharing!! lol I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I guess I should have posted our old school room (now playroom) that looks like a bomb went off in it. LOL I got the classroom in order, but the other room we moved from is currently a dumping ground. I will get it to it one day... but not today. =) Blessings for a great year! http://lovinglosingliving.blogspot.com/

    1. Well, it is encouraging (especially after seeing all those perfectly organized homeschool rooms) to know that others have the same problem I do!

      Have a great weekend!
